Deborah (Debbie) Dumaresq, AHC
Specification Writer, dormakaba Canada Inc.
Responsibilities:
My role is Specification Writer for several Division 8 sections, primarily Finish Hardware 087110, but also for Automatic Sliding and Swing Door Operators, and Interior Glass Entrances. I work with Architects, Engineers and their clients from early stage Design Draft to Construction Documents through to final close out, providing specification documents and technical coordination with other trade sections.
What led you to the door and hardware industry?
Family! My Dad started out in the hardware industry as a very young man and received his AHC in 1967. My sister and I were pulled into "service" on the odd occasion when Dad had to install cores or cylinders at some jobsite or in locks while at the kitchen table - the enticement was 25 cents a lock which seemed like a pretty good deal as a kid. He later started up his own sales agency with Division 8 and 10 products. I eventually joined him full time, starting out doing admin work and gradually worked into sales and estimating.
How many years have you been in the industry?
A lifetime - but in the best possible way! I started at my Dad's agency in 1983. As the years passed, I realized I wanted and needed to learn more about hardware, doors and frames. I knew the best way to do this would be from the ground up, as many before me had done - by starting entry level at a local Contract Hardware Distributor. This was 1989, and the start of my journey with DHI and DHI Technical Schools.
What was your first job?
My very first part time job in high school was at a fast food restaurant chain. At the time, like all teens my main goal was purely for spending money. But I later discovered as a young adult that I had learned some valuable life lessons from that lowly first job - to show up, do your job to the best of your abilities, and the power of team work. My first "adult" job was with a Tile & Flooring Supplier/Installer. The lessons learned from my burger days gave me the confidence I needed to work with the public again in a more serious and professional role.
What is your proudest professional moment?
Definitely achieving my AHC designation in 2008. After a few interruptions along the way in my DHI training and one exam retake, I still vividly remember the day I received my letter from DHI. Relief and elation all rolled into one marvelous feeling of being proud that I never gave up on my goals. The first person I called was my Dad of course - he was my biggest cheer leader through out my journey.
What has been your biggest challenge?
In the early days of my career, there were very few women in this industry, or the construction industry in general for that matter. Being taken seriously and respected was a huge challenge for many of us back then. Thankfully - those days are gone with a huge rise in the numbers of women having very successful careers and leadership roles within our industry.
Who do you consider a mentor or hero?
I have been really fortunate to have had several really good mentors, especially in the early days of my career. Sadly, Frank Verge and Ron Were are no longer with us, but their guidance and encouragement have stayed with me.
What is the best advice you ever received?
The best learning experiences start with a question. Never be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions - someone is always willing to help or point you in the right direction for answers.
What is the best advice you never received?
In life and work - be a better listener than a talker........solutions come about from understanding what the problem or challenge is.
What changes have you seen in the industry over recent years?
Access control integration and electronic hardware are prevalent on almost every building now. Our industry has, has in my opinion, been keeping pace or fast tracking new products and technologies that align with the security needs of todays clients and facility groups.
What changes do you see facing our industry in the future?
Continued growth in advanced electronic hardware products; and an increase in the use of artificial intelligence applications for estimating, project management and even specifications. Staying up to date on these advancements will be key in the coming years.
Fun fact you wish to share
