Courtney Sheals, DHC
Estimator/Project Manager, Coastal Entrance Solutions
Responsibilities:
I specialize in Estimating and Project Management, analyzing architectural drawings, door schedules, and hardware sets. My responsibilities include reviewing project scope, specifications, and Division 8 requirements to ensure accuracy and compliance. I collaborate closely with General Contractors, Architects, and end users to ensure each building meets functional needs and code requirements as they relate to Division 8 products.
What led you to the door and hardware industry?
I completed a two-year Architectural Drafting program at Nova Scotia Community College in 2013. During my first year, my instructor was approached by an Architectural hardware distributor seeking a summer student between first and second year. That opportunity became my introduction to the industry. I quickly discovered a genuine interest in the field and was drawn to the continuous learning and growth it offered. By my second year, I knew I wanted to pursue a long-term career in project management and estimating.
How many years have you been in the industry?
13 years.
What was your first job?
I began my career with Apex Industries in the summer of 2013, supporting Project Managers with handings, scope reviews, and closeout documentation. Throughout my second year of college, I continued working part-time while strengthening my understanding of construction documents, floor plans, and specifications. After graduating in 2014, I was hired as a Project Coordinator, where I began estimating small projects and assisting with shop drawing submittals.
What is your proudest professional moment?
Obtaining my DHC in December, 2024.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Obtaining my DHC in December, 2024. Kidding... sort of! Being a single mom of two girls throughout my entire career in a fast-paced, demanding industry. It's both rewarding and challenging at the same time.
Who do you consider a mentor or hero?
My mom is my hero. She was also a single mother who went to college while caring for three small children and she steadily advanced in her career, ultimately becoming a director in her field.
What is the best advice you ever received?
If you stay in the industry, you'll never be without a job!
What is the best advice you never received?
This is a hard question. I've had so many mentors in the industry who have given me the best advice, I can't think of something industry driven that they haven't taught me.
What changes have you seen in the industry over recent years?
The fast-paced nature of the industry. It was demanding when I started, but it has only grown faster and more complex. Architectural drawings are often issued incomplete or with inconsistencies, and tight timelines have become the norm.
What changes do you see facing our industry in the future?
There’s a growing focus on electrified hardware and access control, which means there’s always something new to learn. Technology keeps changing and improving, so it’s important to stay up to date and continue training to keep up with the industry.
